According to the British Inquirer , Researchers at the Japan National Institute of Information and Communications Technology have developped a robot with non-verbal communications skills. Accordingto the paper, the humanoid can communicate using gestures. The 187-pound robot stands about five feet tall and uses a 3D vision system to recognize gestures like pointing and bowing and determine their meaning, and then use the same gestures when appropriate. The researchers envision this technology being used in caregiver robots for the elderly.

Now, considering that Japan is soon to become synonymous with innovation and creativity with all the cool stuff that the Japanese intelligentsia keep coming up with day after day, it’s nothing but obvious that if real transformers existed, they had to be in Japan. Well, the fact is that it’s true, well, at least partly. The robot you see above, from a Japanese robotic competition, can actually transform from car mode to robot mode…cool init? It’s great to have a slice of a great movie in real life, and this one’s sure going to be something you dig as it’s of a movie that was as cool as it could get. Of course its as tiny as a robot could possibly be, but what would actually set this apart from being a regular, commercial or rather popular item is the lack of funding and of course the fact that something 10 times the size of this could not be cool, I guess just plain scary. So you know that robotics is sure to become the next big thing in the world of tomorrow and you can all but be a part of that revolution. Like they say, ‘if you can’t beat em, join em’. So how about being able to design your own robot? Who ever said that robotics was limited to the mind of that genius spending every waking hour in the technology lab? Now you can bake a slice of that cake yourself too. What you see up there is a robotic flower that uses a revolutionary standardized robotic platform called Qwerk. Developed at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Qwerk is designed so that almost anyone can use it to build his or her own custom Internet-enabled robot. Cool init? So you don’t need to sound intimidated when that robot-manufacturing guru talks about some sophisticated robot-development language

“As much as I admire the technology inside Wow Wee’s latest, the Roboquad, there’s something about a scuttling spider-robot that freaks me out”, writes Slashgear in an interesting post earlier today. Perhaps it’s partly to do with the degree of AI that makes him inquisitive all of his own accord. Using the supplied remote control would be one thing, but having it suddenly dash out from under a chair would be quite another! Anyway, courtesy of our friends over at Robots Rule we’ve got the first Roboquad commercial: Wow Wee Roboquad.
