“As much as I admire the technology inside Wow Wee’s latest, the Roboquad, there’s something about a scuttling spider-robot that freaks me out”, writes Slashgear in an interesting post earlier today. Perhaps it’s partly to do with the degree of AI that makes him inquisitive all of his own accord. Using the supplied remote control would be one thing, but having it suddenly dash out from under a chair would be quite another! The english edition of the People’s daily reports today that in early 2007, China set up its first intelligent device defusing and reconnaissance robot unit in the city of Zigong, in Sichuan province. The robot, named “Vanguard No.1,” can complete missions of battlefield reconnaissance, defuse bombs and attack targets.

Security: Robot stands guard at Korean school

According to an AFP news report, a robot is to be deployed as a security guard at a South Korean school in what its creators claim is a world first, the Korea Times reported on Thursday. The robot, dubbed OFRO, will be posted at a Seoul middle school to test its potential before going on sale.
Makers DU Robo said it could be used to alert staff to attempts by outsiders to seduce students. “One possible scenario is that OFRO will alert officials when it detects someone trying to seduce a student,” the firm’s CEO Kang Jung-Won told the newspaper. Read more
